Foot and Ankle Pain Treatment (Musculoskeletal Podiatry)

Musculoskeletal podiatry is a specialised area of podiatry that focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of lower limb pain in both adults and children. It is a sub-specialty within podiatry that requires specialised knowledge of the lower limb and injury rehabilitation.

We assess and treat various conditions, including plantar fasciitis, Morton's neuroma, and Achilles tendinopathy, among others. Every condition of the foot and ankle requires a detailed and customised treatment program tailored to your individual needs.

In addition to foot and ankle health, we consider your overall health, order blood tests, arrange imaging, and coordinate with other healthcare professionals when necessary. We work closely with your GP, Physiotherapist, and Orthopaedics to ensure that you receive comprehensive care.

At Dunford Health, we specialise in assessing and treating foot and ankle pain.

What does a Musculoskeletal Podiatry Appointment Include?

As part of your assessment, we will conduct a thorough history-taking session to understand your problem better. This is the most crucial part of your appointment, as it will provide us with most of the information we need to diagnose and treat your condition. During this session, we will ask you several questions to gain relevant insights about your condition and your goals from the appointment. This may include your ability to walk the dog or run a marathon. We will inquire about the onset, duration, and type of pain you are experiencing, among other things.

Following this, we will perform various clinical tests, including a biomechanical assessment, to confirm the diagnosis. The diagnosis may be conditions such as plantar fasciitis, Morton's neuroma, or other foot and ankle problems. From the diagnosis, we will create a tailored treatment plan for you. This may include recommending certain types of footwear, exercises to perform, and advice on managing your activities. If necessary, we will arrange imaging or refer you to other healthcare professionals.

Exercise Rehabilitation

Foot and ankle conditions, whether they are overuse injuries or traumatic injuries, can often be improved through a personalised exercise program. Such a program can help you regain strength and flexibility, and ultimately reduce your pain, helping you return to the activities you love. It's important to follow an exercise program that can be adapted as you progress, as this is key to achieving success.

Orthotics

Orthotics or insoles may be recommended as part of your treatment plan if they can benefit your condition. They work as a pressure relief device, aiming to reduce stress from certain areas of your foot. We specialise in prescribing the correct pair of orthotics/insoles for your condition. This may include semi-bespoke orthotics that we can modify and provide to you on the day of your assessment. Alternatively, it may require a custom pair of orthotics that are made to order.
